Formula E enters its Gen3 era with a bang in Mexico as McLaren and Maserati join the grid

Formula E’s all-new Gen3 machine is the fastest, most powerful, and most efficient electric race car ever. With this new era comes sweeping changes throughout almost the entire grid.

Headlining those changes is the addition of two new teams with iconic brands behind them.

The NEOM McLaren Formula E Team brings the distinctive papaya livery that’s become so familiar in Formula 1. The team features DTM champion René Rast and new driver Jake Hughes, who won the first exhibition race in Gen3 machinery in Valencia.

Maserati MSG Racing has signed two veteran race winners to help them in an effort to find the podium. Edoarda Mortara scored four wins last season, and teammate Maximilian Guenther has three career victories in the series.

The Cupra brand also joins the series, partnering with ABT to form the ABT CUPRA Formula E Team. Porsche has come to power the Avalanche Andretti Formula E team.

Besides that, Envision Racing, the Nissan Formula E Team, Mahindra Racing, and NIO 333 Racing all feature new driver lineups. Indeed, of the eleven teams, only Jaguar TCS Racing has an unchanged lineup of Mitch Evans and Sam Bird.

But the power team has to be DS Penske, with a driver lineup of defending champion Stoffel Vandoorne and Jean-Eric Verge, the only driver to have won multiple championships in the series.

All 22 drivers will take to the track for the first time on Saturday. The Autodromo Hermanas Rodriguez in Mexico City has hosted Formula E racing since 2016. TAG Heuer Porsche won last year, meaning every team on the grid has a fresh start.

The hunt in Mexico will be for a brand-new winner’s trophy, designed by Beta, to represent the Gen3 era.

“We tasked Beta with creating a trophy that would be the pinnacle expression of our new brand identity,” said Henry Chilcott, Formula E Chief Marketing Officer.

“Inspired by the instant torque of electric acceleration, the trophy speaks to our sport’s role as a powerful catalyst for change, whilst also capturing the excitement and speed of electric racing. We can’t wait to see it lifted in celebration at our first race of Season 9 in Mexico City on Saturday 14 January.”

Other new partners for the series include freighter DHL and tire supplier Hankook. The ABB Formula E Hankook Mexico City E-Prix will air in the United States at 11:30pm ET on CBS Sports.
