Jake Dennis locked up the Drivers Championship early at a unique indoor-outdoor double-header E-Prix at London’s ExCel center, but Nick Cassidy had a tougher battle to ensure a Constructors win for Envision Racing.
And he stepped up to the challenge, leading every lap of the second race of the weekend in dominating fashion while also securing the fastest lap.
It, and a sixth for teammate Sebastian Buemi in that race, was enough for his Envision Racing team to secure the Constructors title. Buemi also finished third in the first of the two races, with Cassidy failing to finish.
“It’s mixed emotions but ultimately I’m very happy,” the Kiwi said of his weekend, “because today was a difficult day for me mostly because I didn’t sleep well last night, I arrived late – but I did the business so I’m proud. The team have been absolutely incredible.”
“They’re an incredible bunch of people and they work so hard. Of course every team does but these guys have been close on so many occasions and I think that just shows how strong they have been in this championship, and to finally get it done for them I am super super happy,” he added.
Envision Racing won by just twelve points over Jaguar TCS Racing. Jaguar driver Mitch Evans won the first race of the two on Saturday.
He took the lead a few laps in and survived a chaotic E-Prix that featured two red flags, one of which meant the race finished with a three-lap sprint.
With a runner-up finish in that race, US-based Avalanche Andretti’s Jake Dennis clinched the Drivers championship for himself.
“I am lost for words, honestly,” the British driver said. “It means so much to me, the boys standing out there, we have had everything thrown at us, honestly it felt like everyone was racing against us – but Jesus Christ we have just become world champion! I am so happy for myself, the team, everyone – we deserve this so much.”
“I only joined this championship three years ago,” he added. “We almost won in our rookie year but now to come back and have the year that we have had, breaking all the podium records. To become world champion is mind blowing, I really didn’t think it could happen coming into this year, but full credit to my boys. I love them so much, they have given me an absolute rocket ship all year, this is the least I could do for them
Dennis had a comfortable advantage coming into the weekend, and, after Sunday, would end up with a 30-point lead over Nick Cassidy, who finished second in the standings.
Mitch Evans would go on to finish third in the standings by just two points after winning on Saturday.
“I want to take a moment to congratulate Jake on the world championship,” he said magnanimously.
“It is a hard one for me Obviously I came here to try and fight for the championship on the second day, we did all we could but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. It is what it is, Jake deserved that.”
Formula E will resume for its tenth season on January 14th in Mexico City.
