Defending Formula E champion Nyck de Vries led a Mercedes double-podium on Sunday with a commanding race. After taking the lead from polesitter – and winner of the first Berlin race on Saturday – Edoardo Mortara with a bold pass, he drove away from the field and never looked back.
“It caught me a little bit by surprise,” de Vries said about his overtake. “I had a good start and obviously I had the tow from Edo. The opportunity came as a surprise, but I took it and it worked out successfully.”
He added: “I have had a bad time in the past three races, so I am very pleased to come back after a difficult day yesterday,” where he finished tenth. “It definitely helped to be in command and do your own race – I think that makes a huge difference,” he said. “I’m very, very happy with a comeback.”
Edoardo Mortara could only manage second after being unable to catch de Vries. He said: “The race was quite good obviously, we are standing here on the podium. But congrats to Nyck and Mercedes, they were having better pace than us. I was trying to hang with him, but he was definitely quicker in the end. It is still a great weekend for us, two pole positions, a victory yesterday and a second place today.”
His ROKiT Venturi Racing car uses a Mercedes powertrain, giving Mercedes powertrains every spot on the podium. It’s the team’s last year in the series ahead of a buyout by McLaren.
De Vries said: “It shows that Mercedes are doing things right [with ROKiT Venturi Racing powertrain]. They have a very competitive package, and I am very happy to be driving one of these cars for the last three years.”
Championship leader and fellow Mercedes driver Stoffel Vandoorne finished third, extending his points lead as Mortara passes Jean-Eric Vergne for second. He said it was “a little bit less action than yesterday for me. But nonetheless it is great to be back on the podium, our cars were flying again today. A double podium this weekend, I am definitely happy with that.”
